9. Iggy Azalea
Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly in Sydney, Australia, performer Iggy Azalea began rapping at age 14. She wanted to form a rap group similar to TLC, but Azalea was the only one serious about the endeavor, she said. She dropped out of high school and saved money to move to the United States, which she did right before she turned 16.
Saying it was just a vacation to the United States, Azalea told her parents she wasn’t coming home. She earned her GED, collaborated with other singers and changed her name. After moving to Los Angeles, Azalea released a mixtape and received an Internet following for her videos. While trying to find a record label to release her album, Azalea released songs and videos online and opened for big acts.
At the end of 2013, a song titled Leave It was leaked online, which later revealed to be the song Fancy, Azalea’s most successful single to date. Her long awaited album The New Classic finally released in April 2014, and Azalea began collaborating with other well-known performers such as Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears.
Azalea might have been riding high, but she made a brief tumble in 2014. During a pre-MTV Video Music Awards show in Los Angeles, Azalea stepped right off the stage while performing Fancy. Later on the red carpet, she blamed Jennifer Lopez. According to E!, Azalea said, “I said, ‘at least I didn’t fall over,’ and she said ‘It’ll happen to you one day. And then I invited her to watch that show and I fell off the stage! I was like, ‘You’re bad luck!’”
